What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are versatile tooth replacement prosthetics that can support dental crowns, bridges, or dentures. Designed to look like small titanium screws, they mimic the function of natural tooth roots by delivering added stimulation to the jawbone once surgically put in place. Once fused with the bone tissues, dental implants offer a stable and secure foundation for a smile that can last a lifetime.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Dr. Mihran’s ability to complete the dental implant process in-house allows for a more convenient and comfortable approach. Although each patient’s case is different, the same process is required: initial consultation, dental implant surgery, osseointegration and abutment placement, and delivery of the final restoration. To discover more about what kind of steps our team must take to ensure the success of your new smile, keep reading.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation

When meeting with Dr. Mihran for your initial consultation, you can expect him to evaluate three key components – your oral health, overall health, and jawbone density. Making sure you are in good enough shape to undergo dental implant surgery is important but so is determining whether your jawbone can support these artificial teeth.
If he finds that you cannot move forward with surgery, do not become disheartened. We can administer appropriate care to improve the health of your teeth and gums (i.e., gum disease treatment, tooth extraction, restorative care, etc.) so that once you are healed, you can begin the process of receiving dental implants.
Dental Implant Surgery

The dental implant surgical step is completed in-house thanks to Dr. Mihran’s expertise. Not only does this prevent you from needing an outside referral, but it also ensures that you remain with those you already know and trust.
When preparing to place each implant into its appropriate location, we will numb your mouth with a local anesthetic. Once Dr. Mihran is satisfied with your inability to feel discomfort, he will make a small incision in the gums to create an opening for your dental implant. Carefully placing it into the corresponding area of your jawbone, he will then close the incision and place a protective healing cap over your implant post.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment

Once your surgery is complete, you will return home to recover. Although you may be able to go back to work after a few days, the healing process takes much longer. Osseointegration is essential if your dental implants are to last decades or more, and this phase can take 4-6 months to complete. You’ll need to follow the aftercare instructions provided by our team during this time.
After Dr. Mihran is pleased with your healing process, he will place your metal abutments, which help to hold your restoration in place.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)

The last phase of treatment is receiving your final restoration. Earlier in the process, we will take digital impressions of your smile so that a custom crown, bridge, or denture can be created. When ready, we’ll secure it to your implant posts so that you see a newly designed, beautiful smile that allows you to enjoy life to the fullest extent.
Benefits of Dental Implants

In choosing to restore and rebuild your smile with dental implants, you can expect the following benefits:
- Improved bite force that allows you to eat all your favorite foods
- Greater confidence in your appearance – a facet that will prove beneficial professionally and personally
- Improved jawbone stimulation that reduces the chances of future bone loss and facial sagging
- Better oral and overall health because of how implants minimize the risk of systemic conditions, like osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes
- Prosthetics that can last a lifetime as long as you take proper care of them over time
Who Dental Implants Can Help

Most patients who are without a complete smile can benefit from dental implants; however, only a scheduled consultation with Dr. Mihran can determine if these prosthetics are the right option. If certain oral health problems exist, we can take a proactive approach to improve the health of your smile before moving forward with dental implant placement.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Ideally, a good candidate for dental implants should:
- Be in good overall health
- Have a dense and supportive jawbone
- Be free of gum disease and tooth decay
Using the various technologies we incorporate as part of the dental implant process, Dr. Mihran can determine the state of your oral and overall health as well as your jawbone. Based on his findings, he will recommend the most beneficial approach to tooth replacement.
Missing One Tooth

Using a single dental implant, we can replace one missing tooth. All that is required is a titanium post, a metal abutment, and a customized dental crown. Once put into place, you will immediately feel more confident in your appearance and enjoy eating and speaking with greater ease.
Missing Multiple Teeth

Using two dental implant posts and a customized dental bridge, we can replace multiple missing teeth in a row. By filling in the gaps in your smile, we can deliver a more aesthetically pleasing and functional result that doesn’t require altering healthy teeth like a traditional fixed bridge.
Missing All Teeth

When living with a full row of teeth, you don’t have to settle for regular dentures if you prefer a more secure and stable approach. Using between 4 and 6 dental implant posts, we can rebuild your smile’s foundation before attaching a fully customized denture that snaps into place. What you’re left with is a functional set of teeth that allows you to eat all your favorite foods and avoid the embarrassment of slurring your words.
Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

When it comes to determining the cost of your dental implants, you must understand that each case is different. What you pay is likely to be very different than someone else’s price estimate, especially when you consider the number of dental implants you will need, the type of restoration you will require, and whether Dr. Mihran recommends additional pre-treatment services (i.e., bone grafting, gum disease treatment, etc.). Once we have a complete estimate available, our team will go over the details with you so that you are fully aware of any out-of-pocket expenses.
Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

If Dr. Mihran finds that your jawbone will not adequately support your new dental implants, he can recommend bone grafting. This process requires a surgical procedure that our team can perform in-house and involves placing new grafting materials into various areas of your jawbone. As the new and existing bones integrate, a more durable and dense foundation will form, allowing the titanium posts to remain stable once they are put into place.
Dental Implant FAQs
Can Dental Implants Replace Molars?
Yes, they can! So, whether you are missing one of your molars or all of them, you shouldn’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with our team at West Broward Dental Associates. From there, we can determine if dental implants are the ideal tooth-replacement solution for you.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
There are several noteworthy benefits that come with dental implants in Coral Springs, including the fact that they can last for 30+ years. The key to prolonging the lifespan of yours is proper care and maintenance. More specifically, we recommend committing to a solid oral hygiene regimen at home, wearing a mouthguard during sports, eating mostly healthy, well-balanced meals, and scheduling a dental checkup and cleaning every six months.
What Can Cause Dental Implants to Fail?
Since dental implants have a success rate of over 95% for non-smoking patients, failure is quite rare. When it does happen, it’s usually due to either peri-implantitis (a form of gum disease) or failed osseointegration (when the implant and jawbone don’t fuse together properly). To reduce the chances of either happening, we will provide guidelines for minimizing your risk of implant failure throughout the treatment process.
Am I Too Old to Get Dental Implants?
Do you feel like you’re “too old” to get dental implants? If so, we have good news for you: there isn’t an upper age limit. Instead, candidacy is determined by factors like the strength of your jawbone, the health of your gums, and your willingness to break bad habits, like smoking. So, whether you’re in your 30s or you’re in your 90s, you shouldn’t let your age stop you from scheduling a consultation at our Coral Springs dental office.
Do Dental Implants Decay?
Since dental implants are artificial, they cannot decay. Of course, any remaining natural teeth you have still can. Plus, your gums can develop an infection if they are neglected, increasing your risk of failure in the process. So, it’s of the utmost importance that you continue to take good care of your smile.
Is There Anything I Shouldn’t Eat with Dental Implants?
Although there aren’t any strict dietary restrictions, certain foods can cause your restoration to crack or get pulled out of place. For that reason, we recommend avoiding crunchy snacks, like hard pretzels, as well as taffy, caramel-filled candies, and other sticky sweets. Instead, fill your plate with foods that benefit your oral and overall health, like plain yogurt, scrambled eggs, and cottage cheese.
How Can I Make Dental Implants More Affordable?
Good news: some dental insurance providers do cover a portion of the cost of dental implants, like the restoration that’s secured on top. So, if you are insured, don’t hesitate to provide us with your membership information. If you don’t have insurance, then ask us about the other financial solutions that are available. At West Broward Dental Associates, we have an in-house dental savings plan and welcome flexible financing with CareCredit!
